Living My Dream of Working on Capitol Hill

Dear SALDEF Supporter, My name is Harmeet Kaur and I am currently a staffer in the office of Congressmen Al Green. I am one of the few Sikh Americans who currently work on Capitol Hill and I love what I do. I got this position because of my experience with SALDEF. Through SALDEF’s SikhLEAD Internship program,  I was placed in with the office of Congresswoman Judy Chu. This was my first exposure to a congressional office and it was an amazing experience. I learned about a wide range of topics including healthcare, immigration, and housing, and also discovered what it takes to introduce and pass a bill. I also had the opportunity to work on legislation that directly affects our Sikh American community. To me, the SikhLEAD program opened this door.  It presents a much needed opportunity for young Sikh American leaders to bring their talents to Washington, DC and represent our community.  It’s an opportunity to explore a non-traditional career path and it’s an opportunity to add our voice to the national discussion. Join me in giving other students the same opportunity to grow that I had. I hope you will consider making a 100% tax deductible donation to SALDEF today.  Your donation pays for intern stipends, transportation, activities and program administration. Participating in the SikhLEAD Internship program was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.  In fact, the program was critical in helping me achieve my dream and goal of working in Congress. Without the experience that I obtained as a SikhLEAD intern on Capitol Hill, it would not have been possible for me to continue down the path of working in politics, and be a voice for our community. The more we as a community support this program, the more Sikhs we will have on Capitol Hill to advocate for us and ensure our community’s voice is heard.  This is a vision I think we all share and I am thankful to be benefiting from such support. Sincerely, Harmeet Kaur 2011 SALDEF-SikhLEAD Intern
