6 Month Anniversary of Oak Creek Attack

Dear Sangat Ji, Six months ago, on August 5, 2012, we witnessed the greatest tragedy in Sikh American history when a gunman fueled by hate and ignorance killed six members of our community in an attack on the Gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin.

As I reflect on those tragic events which took us to Oak Creek, I am inspired by the strength and resolve that the Sangat showed and continues to show the nation. We all drew strength from their spirit of Chardi Kala (high spirits) as they reopened the doors of the Gurdwara one week later. Their resilience and compassion showed people of all backgrounds that we can be fearless, transcend our divisions, and find love and compassion in times of sorrow.

To the members of the Oak Creek Sangat, I reaffirm our commitment to support you as you move forward.  We will continue to work for an America that sees Sikhs as an integral part of society. We will continue to work for an America where we can come together and ask for sarbat da bhalla (blessings for all).  This is long and difficult work, but the memory of your loved ones fuels us on.

I know I am not alone in offering our thoughts and prayers to you on this day. We shall always be members of the Oak Creek Sangat. Guru Fateh, Jasjit Singh Executive Director
