Sat Nam.
What a lovely and inspiring success.
Is kundalini yoga, banis, etc. incorporated into the program? Being that these pracitices are the basis of our lifestyle perhaps if not happening now they can be implemented in the future.
Are you communicating with Camp Miri Piri which took place in Calgary a few months ago?
 Thank you for your work.

[...] Ten years later, in April of 2011, in an unfathomable turn of events, Arizona Governer, Jan Brewer, was seriously deciding on signing a bill to remove Balbir Singh Sodhi’s name from the state’s 9/11 memorial and sell his memorial plaque as scrap metal! Thankfully, because of Sikh organizations like SALDEF and the word getting out through social media sites like FaceBook and Twitter, Brewer vetoed the bill, but the fact it was being considered is cause for alarm itself (read about it here).
Balbir is always in my thoughts whenever September 11th comes around and especially on the 15th of September. He will always be missed. His murder was senseless and tragic, but his memory will live on thanks to the efforts of his family. I wish them the best, always.

It is unfortunate that Sikhs continue to be targets of mistaken identity and hate violence around the world in retaliation to terrorism perpetrated by al qaeda and other misguided terrorists organizations. Sikhs have made some effort to educate the world about their unique identity, values and philosophy but more needs to be done. Aligned with this goal is the SikhComics project started early this year. Aim is to publish illustrated colour comic books based on Sikh history; that are easy and quick read and a great primer to understand the Sikhs. They are currently available at http://www.sikhcomics.com

The Sikh Religion primarily began in the 15th centuary in the Punjab in Northern India. The population of Sikhs around the world is about 30 million. In the Espanola Valley in New Mexico, Sikhs have lived and worked in the community and surrounding cities for over 42 years. They are known generally as hard working, honest and caring people. I personally have known many, many of the Sikh men and women who have worked as Paramedics, Doctors, and Nurses as well as other Professionals who have proudly served the New Mexico community. It's unfortunate when DISCRIMINATION happens to people because of their religious beliefs. The Sikh Religion is one of the 6 major Religions of the World. I know the Sikhs are diligent and will pursue this if need be to the Supreme Courts. Good luck from all the 30 Million Sikhs worldwide for your constitutional right to pursue the Religion of your choice in the United States of America.

yes mr sahaj singh must have got hurt from the indifferences being faced.........

.it is of least importance for a guru's sikh to get affected by some petty institute's intolerance ...though it's basic foundation is of serving n taking care of people physically n mentally without any discrimination. The institute itself has failed in protecting its constitution ,by forcing mr singh to suffer bcoz of his belief.
Mr sahaj is blessed to face this ..(though easier said than experinced)and must have considered more avenues to be among people of high integrity in what they do as their way of serving and participating in the society.

Greatness is identified and confirmed to the level of challenges and crises that it is able to confront, withstand and overcome.

What "Khalsa" means is "That until the light of the Sun itself burns out and dies, Khalsa will not retreat from any challenge to truthfulness. Khalsa will stand with and support any human being who is faced by abuse, oppression or discrimination. Truth owns the Victory (Fateh!). Any person who stands willing to die so that Truth can prevail is one and the same as Khalsa. The Victory of Truth is Inevitable"

[...] This heavy dose of religious faith, activism, violence, tragedy, and triumph made this third day of our tour a rather heavy one to process. I was particularly moved by the well-known case of Balbir Singh Sodhi, a Sikh from India, who was gunned down in the wake of 911 because his assailant wanted to “kill a Muslim.” Sodhi’s death reminded me of the worry experienced by members of my own family, living in New York, in the wake of 911. Was Sodhi a victim of 911? Apparently, the state of Arizona did not think so and for some time toyed with the idea of removing his name from a memorial for victims of 911. In April 2011 the state backed down in deference to the wishes of the Sodhi family and thousands of individuals who had petitioned on their behalf. That is where the matter rests, for now. More details are available at http://www.saldef.org/news/victory-arizona-governor-vetoes-anti-sodhi-memorial-bill/ [...]

Should we all shave then, knowing that we may have to go to PHS for treatment?

I am a health care worker and Sikh in Espanola. I contacted the hospital before Sahaj Singh resigned and spoke to the administrator asking her to stop the discrimination. She said that they were trying to "Protect" Sahaj by asking him to shave his beard even though there was another kind of respirator that could be used.
Religious freedom is one of the basic principles that this country is founded on and it is shameful that the Espanola Hospital, while falsely claiming to "protect" their employee, actually were attempting to force him to stop practicing his religion.
I will refer all of my patients to St. Vincents in Santa Fe from now on until this hospital revisits it's ignorant policies.

We choose to live in this country because of the religious and other freedoms it gives us unconditionally. It is an outrage that a noble healthcare professional like Sahaj Singh Khalsa has to go to such lenghts to secure this freedom.

This is outrageous. The way people are treated just
because they have a different religion and a different appearance. Thank you all the organizations for helping people maintain their basic freedoms. No one should wrong someone and get away with it.

May God be with you always

I thought that Presbyterians weren't supposed to practice intolerance. Some Sikhs may not feel as strongly about Kesh, but that doesn't mean that more traditional Sikhs shouldn't have rights.

Perhaps it was good to come to a head so that those in power who practice intolerance have a chance to grow.

Good follow through, Sahej!

Hi! It is very unfortunate that even in this century people behave in this fashion. You should all realize that this is the land of immigrants and this being the biggest democracy, all of us have the right to work at any workplace irrespective of caset, creed or religion.

Mr. Sahaj Singh, you need not worry we all Khalsa's are with you.

Bigotry has no place in our society. Sahaj - thank you for standing up for your rights and getting the American Civil Liberties Union involved. Presbyterian Health Services and the decision makers involved in forcing your resignation must be held accountable. Our country historically has embraced diversity, and our constitution demands equality for everyone.

The concern that the hospital appears to have over the limitations of Mr Khalsa to perform his duties as a paramedic with facial hair are largely unfounded. Particularly if he uses a mask to cover his beard. There are a number of sikh physicians who have performed operations in this country for the past many decades with their facial hair and no compromise to patient care. This can easily be established by the hospital as their are a number of sikh professionals in the medical profession.
It appears that the hospitals approach is largely based on a discriminatory stance against an unfamiliar religion and appearance. This is definitely un American, as the strength in this country comes from its embrace of diversity.

Freedom and equality for everyone???? That is what America stands for?? All I hear about is discrimination against people. How can one be so ignorant?? No beards for paramedics?? What is the basis for that rule?? I also work in a health care facility, with paramedics, nurses, doctors, therapists, and not having a beard is not a qualification.

I am lucky that I live in Canada.

At times like this I am very ashamed of the human race. Even animals are better.

I feel we have to handle this issue or any issue of this kind on two levels.First, taking legal action and secondly which is more important educating through all possible channels whether it be media school /college levels.Justice has to be sought by all means as discrimination and hate crimes are illegal. This case is obviously an act of moral turpitude for at-least Sikh community if not the entire American society.
May God prevail a beater sense upon us all.

M/s. Presbyterian Health Services (PHS),

You are requested not to discriminate against Sikh tenets and allow Mr. Khalsa to work with his Sikh articles of faith. This will be in consonance with the professed claim of USA of being religious tolerant and accommodative. Your focus should be on performance of the assigned tasks and not on Articles of faith Mr. Khalsa is mandated to abide by his faith whch do not interfere with his jobs. This will help u to demonstrate your claim of being of accommodative of diversity of culture, faiths and customs.

Thanks.

It is disgusting to know how this issue is being undemocratically handled by the Governor of Arizona. I would like to ask the Governor if he has looked at the facts of this case and the message it could give the general public if handled this way. It is a hate crime, if this is not enough then the Governor and his inner cycle who decided this must have something against minorities, because Balbir is a visible minority.

Thank you Governor. You being elected by the people, should educate yourself and know about Sikhs who they are. S. Dalip Singh Dasondh was the first Sikh Congresman elected from Imperial County in 1952. In 1890, First Sikh came to USA and Today in America, population of Sikhs is close to one million. We are known as Doctors, Engineers, Scientists, Professors, Agriculturists and businesmen. Greatnes lies in admetting one's mistake. Thank you again.

First of all my well desrved gratitudes to SALDEF.
I personally feel that the whole Sikh community is indebted to SALDEF for this prompt action.I have a recommendation for a vigorous propoganda about our identity.A few years back I was in Canada and during 'Baisakhi day' I saw a large amount of pamphlet distribution depicting the different turban(head gear styles clearly distinguishing from the turban styles of muslims and rajput etc.It was a great effort.thank you saldef once again.

Once again, thank you SADLEF for promptly taking action on CNN & FT in removing the picture of the Sikh falsely linking to the Bin Laden article. However, it is very important to determine the root cause of this misrepresentation. Hopefully, you will continue to follow up on this case to determine the root cause of this. Was it really a genuine mistake or intentional? It is even more important, that CNN & FT not only apologise publicly, but with your help, they should issue a similar highly publisized and visible positive article on the Sikhs and the issue of mistaken identity since 9/11. Yes, it is a very tough call, but may God give you the strength to make this happen.

This is unacceptable coming from news outlets like CNN and FT and you need to get the word out.

Thank you SALDEF for fighting against the ignorance within our society. You never seize to amaze me in showing the absolute need for this organization. It is absurd enough to be discriminated against for our own religion but it is preposterous that well known news agencies such as CNN are incapable of doing the proper research in determining the difference between Muslims and Sikhs. Nonetheless, religious freedom and tolerance should be applied to all citizens equally and even people of the Muslim faith should not be targeted or singled out in sight of the issues regarding the U.S and Islam.

Thank you once again, your passion and motivation is truly inspirational and heart warming.

This is really terrible that websites like CNN are making such mistakes. I can't believe that they don't understand Sikhs.

Like others said, thank you SALDEF for being vigilant. And like others also said, these sites should issue a letter of apology made available to public preferably available on their site.

Thank you SALDEF teams for actions to protect Sikhs identity. I would like to request they have done a wonderful to train TSA. Now it is time to educate and teach TV, radio media about Sikhs. The main issue should be Turban only without provide all others Kakars, because turban is most visible in public. TV media should be requested to develop some program or news etc to recognize turban of Sikhs. Thank you again

First of all I really like to thank SALDEF and co for keeping an eye out their for any misrepresentation of Sikhs worldwide. Like veer Jasdeep Singh pointed out, SALDEF should push news agencies like CNN and FN to post their apology on their website preferably on the same webpage where the article was featured.

Thanks Saldef, for being so vigilant and taking these issues on for the Sikh community. This, along with the "experiment" on ABC, demonstrate the importance of education and PR. Many, if not most, people in the U.S. have no idea who the Sikhs are. I think this has to be one of our top priorities.

Now that million of peoples viewed these negative images about Sikhs both CNN and FT should educate the readers about Sikhs and the person who approved the picture should apologizes to the community
If both these pictures are coming from same source they should inform Saldef to take necessary action.

Why is that a news network that is worldwide like CNN is making such critical mistakes, that effect more than 30 million Sikhs worldwide. I agree, the CNN staff needs to be urgently trained on who Sikhs are. This is not something that can be taken lightly. The Sikh community continues to be punished for poor media attention to our community. All Sikhs of all ages get effected by these wrong images. I applaud SALDEF for their courage and efforts to stand up for our rights.

Thank you,

Dear Saldef:

We all should thank the Governor, Arizona for being sympathetic to us and vetoing the bill as requested. Therefore, I think you should send a thank you link to all of your subscribers, mailist
members, etc.

I will try finding the Governor's email and write her a thank you email but we all should do that.!!

And thanks to you too because this would not have been possible without your help.!!!
